Ironworks

Loading map...

The Valle della Corte Ironworks in Morigerati is considered one of the most interesting examples of industrial archaeology in the Cilento region.

It was built around the mid-19th century and used to process and smelt iron. It is a prime example of proto-industrial archaeology, covering over 450 square meters; until recently, it was buried under about three meters of earth and hidden by dense Mediterranean scrub. This treasure, spread across two buildings, was unearthed only a few years ago.

A few hundred meters away, an artificial canal diverted water from the river toward the lower section of the ironworks—where a first branch fed two bellows to supply air to a refining fire, and a second branch flowed along the southern side of the building to drive the waterwheel of a hammer mill. The second building of the ironworks, located upstream, served as a storage facility for coal and ore and as housing for the workers.

Near the ironworks, the ruins of a medieval humpback bridge still stand.
