Itinerary #5

The Way of Saint Nilus

A multi-stage route spanning multiple municipalities, with a total length of approximately 105 km, that passes through 11 municipalities and hamlets in the lower Cilento region—from Sapri to Palinuro—following in the footsteps of the Basilian monk Saint Nilus and exploring the architecture associated with him.

The route passes through Morigerati as part of

> SECTION No. 3 | Casaletto Spartano–Morigerati:

it follows the course of the Bussentino River, passes through the municipality of Tortorella and the Farneto Forest, and finally reaches the medieval bridge of Morigerati, ending in the historic center;

> SECTION No. 4 | Morigerati–Caselle in Pittari:

from the historic center, the route continues toward the WWF ā€œGrotte del Bussentoā€ Nature Reserve — where you can witness the resurgence of the karst river, which, from the sinkhole at Caselle in Pittari, submerges and travels its mysterious underground journey before reemerging about 7 km further south.

Passing through a navigable cave, the route then climbs up to the Hermitage of San Michele, from whose terrace you can admire the majesty of the entire karst system of the Middle-Eastern Bussento geosite and the expanse of the mountains and the coastline, all the way to Calabria.

After visiting the Hermitage, the route descends again toward Caselle in Pittari.
