Karst Trail of the Bussento Geosite

An 11.5-km loop trail that winds from the historic center of Morigerati and passes through the areas where karst phenomena have most significantly transformed the landscape.

Passing by the Antico Frantoio — home to the Ecomuseum — the trail descends into the canyon of the WWF Oasis “Grotte del Bussento”: one of the most fascinating river systems in the entire geopark, where the river’s erosive force has carved out a system of gorges that makes it the second-largest karst phenomenon on the Italian peninsula by area and the longest in southern Italy.

Passing through a cave that is accessible to visitors, the route continues uphill to the Hermitage of San Michele, from whose terrace you can admire the majesty of the entire karst system of the geosite and the expanse of the mountains and coastline, all the way to Calabria.

After visiting the hermitage, the trail descends and, following a loop with panoramic views, returns — once again passing through the WWF Oasis — to the town center.
